French
Intent:
We aim to inspire a love of language and develop confident, curious linguists. Through a progressive programme, children develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, building vocabulary and grammatical knowledge and applying these in increasingly varied contexts. Children develop accurate pronunciation, confidence in communication and strategies for understanding unfamiliar language, while gaining an appreciation of French-speaking cultures and the wider world.
Implementation:
French is taught through a progressive and carefully sequenced programme across Key Stage 2. Pupils build on prior learning through regular retrieval and recycling of vocabulary and language structures. Lessons develop listening, speaking, reading and writing alongside explicit teaching of phonics, pronunciation and grammar. Pupils move from familiar words and phrases towards conversations, independent reading and writing, and increasingly spontaneous use of language. French LTP. We have a European Day of Languages each year to appreciate languages and hope to ensure we develop our pupils understanding of diversity.
Impact:
Pupils develop confidence and enjoyment in learning a new language. They can listen, speak, read and write in French with increasing accuracy and independence, applying previously learnt vocabulary and grammatical structures in new contexts. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils have a strong foundation for further language learning and an increased appreciation of other languages, cultures and communities.
